Week 9 Term 4, 7 December 2018
PRINCIPAL - PAULA MACKENZIE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Advent marks the start of the Christmas season. At Mass on Sunday, you would have seen the first candle of Advent lit. The word Advent, from Latin means the “Coming”. It is a time of spiritual reflection as well as happiness and anticipation. This is the time we prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.
The first and most important thing we can do to prepare our children for Advent is to prepare ourselves first. After all, if we are impatient and short tempered and pressured by all the busyness of this season – we won’t be very good at teaching our children anything about quiet, expectant waiting. If they never hear us talk about what we long for from the Lord, how will they learn about this kind of longing? And, if they hear “the coming of Jesus” spoken about at church, and at school, but they never hear us talk about the meaning of the coming of Jesus for us, what kind of message will we be giving them?
Of course, our children will be watching us and listening to us – what we say and do, and what we fail to say and do. So, the first thing we can give our children is our own commitment to enter Advent as deeply as we can. We want to clear our own spirits so that we can be present to theirs. The graces we receive can be the graces we share with them.
TRANSITION
On Wednesday last week, all our children had the chance to meet their new teachers for 2019 and spend time with their new classmates. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to prepare for next year and know exactly where they are and in which rooms. There was a lot of happy chatter and excited faces. The transition went smoothly thanks to our wonderful staff. It is an important part of our year as we want our students to go on holidays knowing who their teachers are and who is in their class.
GRADUATION DISCO
We had a wonderful evening on Friday night when our Year Six students celebrated their final year at St Brigid’s with a Disco. The theme of movies and Hollywood filled the hall. We had an amazing group of mothers come and decorate the hall and what a display it was. I believe our students could not believe their eyes at the scene that unfolded. I have never been to a red carpet event in person but on Friday night it felt like Hollywood had come to Middle Swan. Our students were the stars that shone brightly so congratulations to our awesome decorators you made the night a special event to be remembered.

END OF YEAR MASS
We celebrated an awesome End of Year Mass on Tuesday. It was wonderful to see so many of our parents celebrate with us. Father Benny as always was amazing the way he spoke with the children and spread the message of hope peace and love. It is a fantastic way to finish off the year with a blessing from our spiritual leader. Thank you to our outstanding choir who just add something special every time they sing and their awesome leader Mrs Alison Yeo. To Mrs Erica Manson who runs out PowerPoint and as always our sensational Mr Mike Sibbald for organising and writing the Mass.
END OF YEAR CONCERT
On Wednesday Night we celebrated our End of Year Concert a big thank you to the stars of the show our students who really sung and danced the night away. We had a wonderful range of items to keep parents entertained. We had some wonderful choices of songs and the dance routines were outstanding. Thank you to Tina from Footsteps for the amazing dance routines. Each year we have Footsteps come for the term to teach out amazing students a dance number for the concert. The energy Tina showed throughout the program and on the night was sensational.
A big thank you to Alison Yeo our music teacher for orchestrating the evening and her band of helpers. Thank you also to our sensational staff for coming up with the songs and movements to entertain you. Lastly thank you parents for attending and being such a wonderful audience.

FAREWELL TO STAFF
We have had an amazing year and so much has happened as a school community. It is always sad when we farewell staff as they are an integral part of our community and they will be missed. Each member of our staff make a difference in our school and they will be fondly remembered.
Mrs Anne Brown has had a strong connection to our school. She has been a teacher and leader of our school. We wish Anne well and thank her for the terrific work she has done in our school over the past 14 years. She has led our Literacy throughout the school as well as taught many different year levels, managed class budgets, organised the swimming programme and Concert evenings and so much more. Anne has shown great passion and strength as she has helped to lead our school. Anne loves children and strove to provide great care for all at St Brigid’s, students, staff and parents alike. She was a key link for so many organisations and she always kept children at the centre of her drive. She is both highly organised and has a wonderful eye for detail. She has given so much to so many and we wish her well as she takes on her next leadership challenge at Edmund Rice College Bindoon. Anne you will be truly missed by our whole school community and we thank you for your dedication and drive and energy.
Mr Darran Scattini has been our remarkable Year Six teacher this year and while he has only been with us for such a short time he has made a huge impact in our school and with the children in our care and staff. His dedication to his class is commendable and his neatness is legendary. We wish to thank you Darran for your amazing work ethic and you will be missed.
Mrs Simone Wiles has lead our Playgroup this year and worked in our school last year. We have valued her care and concern for the students and the way she has developed great relationships with the parents in our school.
WELCOME TO NEW STAFF
At this time we would like to welcome Mr Luke Shaw to our school, Luke has been appointed as our New Assistant Principal and Junior science teacher for 2019. I know that you will make Luke very welcome in our school community.
Ms Tara Frediani will also be joining us next year in Year Two with Mrs Motherway, Ms Frediani is no stranger to our school as she has been with us before as our Year One teacher a number of years ago as well as working with our classes in junior science this term.
SCHOLARSHIP TO LA SALLE
I would also like to mention a special student that received a scholarship to La Salle Catholic College. Congratulations to Jessie Ricks on receiving an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Bursary scholarship this is a wonderful achievement and very well deserved.

MOVE FOR OUR SPEICAL EDUCATION UNIT TO THE NEW JEAN ELLSION CENTRE
The School Board has been busy in making the move from our current Special Education Unit to its new location which is the old multipurpose room a reality. The centre will be known as the Jean Ellison Centre from the beginning of 2019 and out students will be our little Jeanie’s. The change has been greatly appreciated by the staff and students and the new area looks fantastic. It is so much bigger and now features an outdoor area as well as a new trampoline that will be seen next term.
PLAYGROUP
Our new playgroup next year will now run from the old education support room as this will become our Early Years room. Mrs Billy-Rooney is busily creating a wonderful room for our students for next year. Currently we are working on bringing a Three Year Olds Program to St Brigid’s, we envisage that this program will begin by Semester Two. We will keep you informed.

I am incredibly grateful for Father Benny who has a kind and loving presence in our school. I would like to thank all the staff for their dedication and support this year across all areas of school life. It is an honour to work with such vibrant and passionate staff who’s greatest priority is the children.

SCHOOL BANKING

Our school banking day is Wednesday morning from 8am until 8.50am. Come along and see us if you would like to join up and start saving!
WE ARE IN URGENT NEED OF A BANKING VOLUNTEER!
We urgently require one or two people to become banking co-ordinators for our school. What’s involved you ask?
We need someone to be available for about 1 hour on a Wednesday morning between 8am and 9am to take the banking money and slips from the children. After the children bank we enter the deposits in via the banking portal, and balance the money. This is all done on the school grounds. After we balance the school banking money, we drop the money bag off at Commonwealth Bank.
School banking benefits the school and our children and if we don’t get a volunteer or two we may not be able to continue school banking next year.
If you would like to know more, please come and see either Nicole or Kelly on a Wednesday morning or feel free to give Kelly a call on 0447 051 641.
