PRAYER OF THE WEEK
God abounds in faithfulness towards you.
That means that His faithfulness is only measured by one standard – abundance!
It is a faithfulness of the highest quantity,
the largest portion, the highest rank and the finest quality.
It is a faithfulness that brings God’s “more than enough” into your life.

PRINCIPAL - PAULA MACKENZIE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It was wonderful to see so many of our families attending the commitment Masses over the weekend as they enrolled their children in the Parish Sacramental Programs. The Church was filled with our families and there was a great joy in the Church. As a school we look forward to walking along side you as you continue on your family’s faith journey.
Annual General Meeting of the P & F and School Board
Thank you to all who attended the AGM, it was a great chance to look back over 2018 and take the time to celebrate all our achievements. During 2018 we had a committed group of individuals who worked tirelessly for the good of the school; many important decisions were made for the future planning of our school.
We are blessed to have a very proactive School Board under the awesome leadership of Dan Godin. This group ensures we are financially sound and has undertaken many projects during 2018 to improve our school facilities. Dan has been a wonderful ambassador for our school with his enthusiasm and love for our school and Catholic Education. He is ably supported by the members of the Board who give their time to improve our school.
We are blessed also to be supported by our amazing P & F under the leadership of Mrs Karryn Purchase and her band of helpers. This group is a powerhouse of our school and helps to build school community and provide wonderful resources for our school.
We are aware that not all parents and caregivers could make the meeting on Wednesday night therefore you will find the minutes of the meeting and the PowerPoint for you to read and view on the website.
Opti-MINDS Workshop
This week a number of our students participated in the Opti-MINDs workshop with Mrs Kathy Boyatiz –Pascoe and their teacher Mrs Annalise Paull. Our students were very excited to share their ideas and take on a number of challenges. This week we have chosen two teams that will enter the Opti- MINDS challenges that will take place in Term 2. We look forward to watching their journey as they progress through the challenges put before them.
Attention Seeking Behaviour
Attention seeking is the most common form of misbehaviour in children and it can take many forms: eating problems, 24 hour a day questioning, showing off, constant interruptions, whining and tantrums. This kind of behaviour is very effective; it is annoying, hard to ignore and is often unknowingly reinforced by parents’ responses.
How do you know if your child’s misbehaviour is purely seeking your attention? If you are annoyed or irritated by a particular behaviour, there’s a good chance it is designed to get your attention. Ask yourself if the behaviour would stop if you ignored it. If the answer is yes, the behaviour is usually attention seeking because this type of behaviour requires feedback to continue.
Children who engage in attention seeking behaviours want to keep their parents (or teachers) busy and fully occupied. Try the following to reduce this kind of behaviour in your children:
- Ignore the behaviour as much as possible. As soon as you respond, either positively or negatively, the child has won. Children will often settle for second best….negative attention is better than no attention from their perspective.
- Help the attention seeker to feel useful. Give them little jobs to do and thank them for their help. They will seek this avenue more often if they feel needed.
- Provide lots of positive attention…..play with them, talk to them, encourage, praise and value their efforts and contributions.
- Catch children being good…..they need to get the message that cooperative, positive behaviour gets them more attention than negative, attention seeking behaviour.
- Plan to spend some time with each of your children. Sometimes children exhibit attention seeking behaviour because they feel a brother or sister is receiving all the attention (this is often the case when a new baby arrives in the house).
God Bless

Paula MacKenzie

LENT
Is the period of forty days that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday.
It is the Christian time of preparation for Easter ~ “The Feast” of the church year, where we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.
It is recognised as a time of fasting, reflection, prayer and penance and is closely linked with Baptism… Where we die to our old ways and rise to new life in Christ.
Sundays are not included in the days of Lent because every Sunday is a Day of Resurrection.
Please encourage your child/children to keep their Lenten promises and contribute to Project Compassion.
ASH WEDNESDAY
Our next whole school mass will be this coming week, Ash Wednesday on 6 March. This will be held at 9.30am in the St Brigid’s Church. Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent and is a day of fasting and abstinence. During the Eucharist, blessed ashes are placed on the foreheads of the faithful and these words are said: “Repent and be faithful to the Gospel”. Please come to join in the celebrations with the children. The ashes will also be given to the Kindy children.
ST BRIGID’S PARISH SACRAMENTAL COMMITMENT MASS
Thank you to those families who attended the Commitment Masses last weekend. Father has now received your sacramental information in preparation for making one of the three sacraments throughout the year. If you were unable to make it to the Commitment Mass and you still want your child to make a sacrament this year, then you need to book an appointment with Fr Benny before the end of next week.

MACQLIT
As you may be aware, our school introduced MiniLit in 2018 to support our junior primary students and their literacy development. This year we will be introducing MacqLit to support our middle-upper primary students. MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of older low-progress readers. It provides teachers with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. We recently sent six staff members to a two-day MacqLit training course and ordered new furniture to assist with the delivery of these small-group lessons. Testing has commenced and this data will be used to identify students for our first intake of MacqLit at our school this year. We thank Mrs Paula McConnell and the highly skilled Education Assistants who are excited to begin their MacqLit lessons. We look forward to our lessons beginning once testing has been completed. This program provides a wonderful opportunity to further meet the specific learning needs of our students.

It was fantastic to see so many students get dressed in their favourite sporting attire to support our St Brigid’s ‘Sporting Heroes’ Day. There was a wide range of sports represented throughout all year groups and it is pleasing to see so many students who have a keen interest in sport and physical activity outside of school, with their clubs and competitions. All of the money which was raised today through student’s gold coin donations, have been collected and will be presented to Kasey and her family to assist with covering some of the costs associated with her Australian U14’s Softball Team tour of New Zealand in April. As I mentioned at Assembly, the St Brigid’s School is extremely excited and proud of Kasey and we wish her all the best this coming April and in the lead up to her tour. A big thank you must also go to both the parents of all students who supported the fundraising event and the St Brigid’s Staff for promoting our ‘Sporting Heroes’ Day. I wish everyone a happy and safe long weekend, with a look to our upcoming swimming trials in week 6.
