PRINCIPAL - PAULA MACKENZIE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you to our wonderful families that were able to come to Mass on Sunday and celebrate Mary Help of Christians in our Parish. Our Children read most beautifully and were sensational in leading the procession with our school banner.
KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS
Over the past few weeks I have been interviewing for our 2020 Kindergarten placements. I have been delighted to meet so many new families to our school. We only have 28 places left and I am aware that a number of our siblings have not yet enrolled. This is just a timely reminder that if your child is eligible to begin Kindergarten next year and you have not yet enrolled it may be prudent to do so.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS
Our Pre-Kindergarten class is now well underway. Mrs D’Agnone-Doyle and Mrs Leanne Bailey are having a sensational time with our youngest students. Presently there is still room for a few more children. So if you are interested please contact the front office. Children must had had their third birthday and be toilet trained.
GRADUATION MEETING
Thank you to our wonderful Year Six parents that attended our first graduation Meeting last Monday. We have formed a committee and will be meeting again on Tuesday 4th, June at 3.30pm in the Year 6B classroom.
LEARNING SELF CONTROL
All children need to learn self-control; it needs to be taught and reinforced. Children need to learn to deal with frustration and to control their disappointment when they do not get their own way or what they want. Managing these times can be very frustrating and challenging for parents, but there are positive and effective ways to help children learn self-control.

Children learn self-control when parents use effective discipline to manage misbehaviour that is consistent, immediate and decisive. Set out below are a number of strategies that assist in developing self-control within children:
1: Establish Clear House Rules:
Children require limits to learn what is expected of them and how they should behave. A few basic house rules that are fair and easy to follow are important to establish ‘baseline’ expectations. The rules should tell children what to do rather than what not to do. eg. Speak in a pleasant tone, keep your hands and feet to yourself.
2: Rule Breaking Learning:
When a child occasionally forgets a house rule it is important that you use it as a learning opportunity. Discuss with your child why their actions are not appropriate or acceptable, then describing or getting your child to suggest the correct behaviour. The correct behaviour can then be practiced.
3: Deliberately Ignoring Some Misbehaviour:
Sometimes minor attention seeking behaviour is best ignored. The child does not get a reward for the behaviour. As soon as they stop the misbehaviour, reward them for doing this! This usually sends a very powerful message about what is acceptable and what is not. Of course, do not ignore more serious misbehaviour; act quickly and decisively.
4: Give Clear and Calm Instructions:
The way you give instructions influences whether children cooperate or not. The following steps are important:
- a) Get close and gain your child’s attention.
- b) Tell your child what they are to do (John, it is time to come inside, please wash your hands.)
- c) Give your child time to cooperate (Pause briefly to give your child time. eg. 5 seconds)
- d) Praise cooperation.
- e) Repeat the instruction, but only once!
5: Back Up Your Instructions with Logical Consequences:
If your child does not comply, then choose a consequence that fits the situation.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

God Bless
Paula MacKenzie

COLLABORATION IN OUR REGION
Collaboration is the chorus line of educational improvement. Whether teachers should collaborate is no longer an issue. The key question now is what are better and worse ways to collaborate? Our teachers recently collaborated with staff from St Anthony’s, Matthew Gibney and Mary’s Mount to focus on the moderation of writing. This collaboration will continue to take place throughout the year. This initiative enables our teachers to meet with educators from other schools to share their ideas and initiatives. It is an important professional learning community which improves teacher effectiveness and student outcomes. I thank our dedicated staff for their commitment to this after school professional learning.
READING AT HOME
Over the next few weeks, I will continue to include some tips that may support you with home reading. Nightly reading forms an important part of homework here at St Brigid’s and research strongly supports fostering a love of reading at home. It is important that children are listened to when reading and also read to by an adult or more capable reader.
Tell family tales
Children love to hear stories about their family. Talk about a funny thing that happened when you were young.
Create a writing toolbox
Fill a box with drawing and writing materials. Find opportunities for your child to write, such as the shopping list, thank you notes, or birthday cards.
Be your child's #1 fan
Ask your child to read aloud what he or she has written for school. Be an enthusiastic listener.
One more time with feeling
When your child has sounded out an unfamiliar word, have him or her re-read that sentence. Often kids are so busy figuring out a word they lose the meaning of what they've just read.
Create a book together
Fold pieces of paper in half and staple them to make a book. Ask your child to write sentences on each page and add his or her own illustrations.
Do storytelling on the go
Take turns adding to a story the two of you make up while riding in a car or bus. Try making the story funny or spooky.
Point out the relationship between words
Explain how related words have similar spellings and meanings. Show how a word like knowledge, for example, relates to a word like know.
Use a writing checklist
Have your child create a writing checklist with reminders such as, "Do all of my sentences start with a capital? Yes/No."
Quick, quick
Use new words your child has learned in lively flash card or computer drills. Sometimes these help kids automatically recognize and read words, especially those that are used frequently.

SACRED SAINTS – INDIGENOUS ROUND 2019
Last week, our Year 6 students competed in the inaugural Sacred Saints Indigenous Round against St Michael's Primary School, Matthew Gibney Primary School and Good Shepherd Primary School. Our students participated in a sport of their choosing, which was either football, soccer or netball. The aim of the fixture was to celebrate Indigenous Culture prior to the Indigenous Round in the AFL, as well as a great way for our students to compete in a an organised fixture, in preparation for the CPSSA Winter Carnival.
The fixture commenced with an opening ceremony that consisted of a traditional smoking ceremony, ‘Welcome to Country’, a didgeridoo performance and some special guests speaking to our students from the local Indigenous community. This set the scene for a fantastic celebration of all cultures throughout the day, and it was pleasing to see so many different students from different backgrounds coming together to compete and have fun on what was a magnificent afternoon. It was a prime example of the comradery and enjoyment that sport can bring to all people within our schools and wider community.
I would like to thank the organisers from Good Shepherd Primary School who organised a large majority of the day and invited our school, along with the others competing, to be part of such a meaningful afternoon.
A big thank you must also go to our parent helpers and coaches for all of their assistance throughout the afternoon. Their input is critical to any sports fixture or event being well run and enjoyable for not just our students, but also the students of competing schools.
At the conclusion of the fixtures, the points across all teams who played were tallied, which resulted in St Brigid’s Middle Swan winning the Inaugural Indigenous Round Shield. Congratulations Year 6s! This was extremely exciting for our students, who not only did their best, but also competed in a manner that would have made Mrs MacKenzie and the entire school community proud.
I look forward to our next fixture in the coming weeks and hope that all our Year 6s enjoyed the fixture.

P & F NEWS
St Brigid’s Parents and Friends Association

Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Friday evening the P and F hosted the “Glow Disco”, our 1st ever! We are so excited it went so well and it’s been so good to have heard such positive feedback. We hope all the children that were able to attend had a great time catching up with their friends, getting their glow on and showing off their best dance moves in the hall.
The DJ for the night was Cue Play DJ – and they certainly busted out some great tunes, getting the students singing, dancing and playing games. It was fantastic to see so many of the children getting involved, and they were all so well behaved. It’s great to see them have some fun after a week of working hard – especially for the Year 3’s and 5’s after completing Naplan during the week. Big high 5’s to everyone for being so good and we hope you all had a blast.
Speaking of working hard, we would also like to say a massive thank you to the teachers that stayed on after school to help out or came by later in the evening. It was very much appreciated having some experience and words of wisdom to help us run a smooth event. A big 3 cheers to Sara Faraone, Giulia De Rizzo, Karen Gandossini, Leanne Bickers, Alecia Gooch, Althea Footman, Jo Vellis and of course our brilliant leaders – Mike Sibbald and Luke Shaw. Thank you so much for all your support and help, it’s great to also have you join in and have some fun after hours with the students.
Our events wouldn’t be as successful without all the additional helpers that jump in to lend a hand. We were extremely lucky to have a great group of La Salle students come along to help out, a lot of them ex St Brigid’s students so it was really nice to see them all again and catch up. Another big thanks to Aaron Sarich, Kayla Vranjes, Natalia Stribley, Gabriella Fondacaro, Isabelle Turner, Emma Pettrillo, Matthew Fondacaro, Sienna Croft, Sinead Soemya, Tahlia Tremlett and Tyla Bickers, thank you for assisting with supervising the children, issuing drinks, popcorn, glow products, painting faces, helping out with the sausage sizzle and joining in the dancing and games. Awesome effort!!
To our wonderful parents and carers that make events like the Disco possible. There is so much planning and work that goes into these events, it is truly takes a group of dedicated and passionate people to make everything fall into place. Your time, support, commitment and great sense of humour make it so much more fun for everyone. Thank you so much to Jo Johnson, Jenny Separovich, Emma Chessell-Keevers, Mel Seegers, Naomi Caldwell, Karen Bondi, Leona Van Geest, Sandra Smith-Soemya, Tara McGill, Nicole Moxham, Katie Ricks, Deanna (DJ) Kingma, Helen Vranjes, Bernie Costello, John Grover and Kim Fondacaro.
Lastly – the Man – The Legend – Pete Constable, Pete is like the backbone in this school, so much is done behind the scenes by Pete – without question. We are so extremely grateful for everything that you do, not only for the P and F but for the whole school. You are exceptional Pete – we’d be lost without you.
We are excited to start working on organising the next Disco. Till then, please remember to keep on shopping at Woolworths for our Earn and Learn Stickers, Midland IGA – Shop for your School, Gilberts Fresh – Support our Schools Programme, and Athletes Foot, to help continue to raise funds for valuable resources for our students. Look forward to seeing you all soon – (always something exciting happening with the P and F). Our next meeting is on the 11th June 9 am, would love to see you there.
Most sincerely,
St Brigid’s P&F
