PRINCIPAL - PAULA MACKENZIE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Term Three has begun and it was wonderful to see the way our staff and students returned to school, eager for learning and ready to participate in many new activities around the school. We would like to welcome Miss Sarah Riddoch to Year One as Mrs Mason has now begun her maternity leave. I know that Miss Riddoch is keen to join our community and has been working hard over the holidays to prepare for her class.
Performing Arts
Today I was delighted to attend the Performing Arts at the Catholic Education Office with three of our students. They performed in the Bible reading section and they were amazing. Mrs Yeo accompanied the students and has been assisting them in their endeavours. They all read most reverently and beautifully and were a credit to our school.
Optimism
Optimism is an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place. Optimists are people who refuse to feel helpless and don’t give up when faced with seemingly impossible problems. They expect to succeed, believe in themselves and remain positive. Optimists generally believe that people and events are inherently good, so that most situations work out for the best in the end.
Optimism includes the assumption I can do something to change this situation for the better, whereas pessimism includes the assumption probably nothing I do will make any difference. Of course, when you're optimistic, you are more willing to take action to change things for the better, which increases the likelihood that things will change for the better; that's how optimism becomes self-fulfilling.
How do children develop optimism? As children grow and develop, they need as many opportunities as possible to experience success. Every time children achieve something they set out to do, they start to develop a belief that they can go on trying and have more successes. ‘Self-talk’ is what we say to ourselves to explain the things that happen through the day. When children are able to say to themselves that they can do something, they are more likely to succeed.
Recent research has indicated that success experiences and positive interactions with parents, teachers and significant others are critical factors in children learning optimism. The way that adults think about and talk about their experiences are very powerful in shaping a child’s beliefs about why success or failure might happen.
The more optimistic children are, the more able they are to succeed and have a sense of the future and the more they are able to make friends and learn at school.
What parents can do:
- Be a good role model - let your children hear how you make sense of a situation (your ‘self-talk’) and share your positive thoughts with your children.
- Re-phrase what your child says - say things or use different words to make more positive sense out of a situation. Child: "I never have anyone to play with." Parent: "Sometimes it’s hard to find a friend, but last week you had a good time with Mary."
- Tell your own stories of overcoming hardships - "When I was at school I thought… but then I realised . . . "
- Give encouragement - "What were your thoughts when you were losing that tennis game?", "How did your thoughts change to help you to move from losing to winning?" Help your child catch the helpful and unhelpful thoughts and stick with the helpful ones.
-
Remember to share some of the old sayings:
- "If at first you don’t succeed - try, try again."
- "There’s no such word as can’t."
- "Every cloud has a silver lining." - Draw your child’s attention to media and highlight public figures or winning teams who have overcome hardship.
May God bless you

Founder’s Day/Mary MacKillop Feast Day (8 August)
On Thursday, 8 August, we will celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross and her contribution to Australia and in particular, our school through the work of the Sisters of St Joseph. Her charisma is embedded into St Brigid’s history through the Sisters of St Joseph, thus we celebrate our Founder’s Day on this day with our traditional Mary MacKillop Mass and Mission Fete.e also made banners depicting the contribution that the Religious Orders of Mercy, Joseph and Francis have provided for our school over the past 117 years. Classes are also preparing for their respective stalls for our Annual Mission Fete and I sincerely thank in advance, all parents who assist by contributing to this. Mass will begin at 9.00am in the MacKillop Hall and everyone in our School Community is warmly invited to attend.
The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment 2019
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) from the week commencing Monday 5 August. The assessment will be accessible to students only online.
Students enrolled in Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 who are following a regular classroom program are expected to participate. Students with disability are also entitled to participate in the assessment. Exemptions may apply.
The Nature and Role of the BRLA
The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests developed and marked by the Office of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. Formal school and student reports are produced by the Office and will become available to schools in Term Four.
The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of student performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, and short and extended response items. Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school based assessment programs in RE.
Please contact your child’s teacher or myself if you have any enquiries regarding the administration of The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment.

HOLIDAY READING CHALLENGE
Welcome back to school for another term!
It was great to arrive on Monday morning and be presented with a big pile of completed Holiday Reading Challenge sheets! We had almost 30 students complete the challenge, which is fantastic to see! Students who completed the challenge received a certificate and small prize at our assembly this afternoon. A photo was taken and can be seen on our school Facebook page.
I encourage all students to continue their nightly reading throughout the term and also read for enjoyment at other times. The infographic below highlights some of the benefits of reading at home.

ST BRIGID'S RUNNING CLUB
WHEN: EVERY TUESDAY 3.15PM - 3.45PM
WHERE: ST BRIGID'S PRIMARY SCHOOL
YEAR GROUPS: PRE - PRIMARY - YEAR 6
RUNNING CLUB - TERM 3
I would like to extend a big thank you to all of the students who participated in our St Brigid’s Running Club for Term 2. Our students have been extremely supportive of the program and the number of students who have been participating each week is very encouraging. Well done students! Running Club will continue as normal from Tuesday the 23rd July (Week 1) in Term 3.
The same conditions which were outlined in the original Running Club note which was distributed at the beginning of Term 2 will still apply to all students. This note can be found below and I encourage all parents to read through this information with their children. The majority of students who attend Running Club each week commit to walking or running as many laps as they can in the allocated time, which is fantastic to see. There is a minority of students though who are taking this time after school to play on the playgrounds or basketball courts which we do not have adequate supervision after school hours. I would like to ask parents to remind their children that they need to stay off the equipment due to safety concerns, as we want to keep all students safe and ensure that they are attending each Tuesday afternoon to develop their fitness and participate, rather than have extra play time on the school equipment. Thank you for your support in this matter and I hope to see familiar faces return, and some new faces having fun and participating this term.

St Brigid’s Running Club 2019 (Original Note)
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Due to the interest shown throughout 2018, we will once again be offering the “St Brigid’s Running Club Program’ again in 2019. Due to a few changes within the school, we will be moving the program from Thursdays to Tuesdays this year. The program will begin on Tuesday of Week 5 (28th May), and will not only prepare students for the Inter House Cross Country Carnival, but also promote an active lifestyle and encourage participation, no matter what a student’s running ability may be.
The essential details are listed below;
When: Every Tuesday 3:15pm – 3:45pm
Where: St Brigid’s Primary School, Middle Swan
Cost: Free
Year Groups: Pre Primary – Year 6
Equipment:
Students will need to bring running attire and running shoes/joggers, and get changed into their attire at the conclusion of the school day, before ‘Running Club’ commences. Students who wear sports uniform on a Tuesday, may participate in their sports uniform.
Parental Support:
This initiative is one which will be a success if we have the full support of the parents who have their children involved. It is expected that each student’s behaviour is of the highest standard and students must maintain this standard of behaviour throughout the program or they will not be able to continue participating in the program. This will include ensuring that students are to be picked up no later than 3:50pm at the conclusion of ‘Running Club’. There will also be incentives for students who run a specified number of laps throughout the term, and any parental help in the recording of student’s laps would be very much appreciated.
I thank you very much in advance for your support, and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact myself via email or in person at school from Tuesday and Friday.
I hope that we can continue this enjoyable and productive program for the students of our school.
Kind regards
Mr Samuel Harris
