Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Interschool Cross Country Carnival
This week we have seen our amazing team of students participate in the Interschool Cross Country Carnival. They ran around the course so well it was overall impressive to see. It is a gruelling race and really tests the stamina of each student. Mr Sam Harris our awesome Physical Education Teacher trained and escorted our students on the day. Thank you also to our wonderful parents for their continuing support I know this really helped our students to try their best on the day. Congratulations to every student.
Bishops Online Testing
This week we have seen our Year Five and Year three student’s practicing for the Bishops online testing. All students in these year levels have spent time working through the practice tests ready for next week. A huge thank you to all the teachers of thee grades as well as Mr Mike Sibbald and Mr Steve Duncan for supporting our wonderful students at this busy time of the year.
Farewell and Good Luck
This week we farewell Miss Stephanie Taddei who has been part of our staff for the last ten years. Miss Taddei has really made an impact on our school and will be greatly missed by all. Miss Taddei is a very enthusiastic teacher who is always smiling and we wish her well in her future teaching career. At this time we would like to welcome Miss Madison Davies to Year Three, Madison joined us today to meet our students and to become acquainted with the school. We wish Madison all the best and look forward to getting to know her as she becomes part of our school.
P & F Meeting
Remember next Tuesday we are holding our regular P 7 F meeting in the Board room next to the front office at 9.00am please feel welcome to join us. Our meetings are always informative and full of joy.
The Love of Reading
Listening to stories is one of the greatest pleasures in a child’s life.
Not only is it an enjoyable experience, but a very valuable
learning time. The physical closeness that comes from snuggling up with a book provides an opportunity to talk about the way books work and to learn new words in context, but also to develop a shared joy in the content of the book. Some things you can point out with your children are: the use of different fonts or text size to indicate emotion or volume; the use of a variety of words in place of ‘said’; the use of punctuation throughout the story; the way the text tells a story but the illustrations help the reader to understand it.
Asking your child what happened in the book and really helping them to understand what the story is about is very valuable. Take the time is ask questions and explore a book together. A great time for older children is when you are cooking and preparing dinner. Your child has the chance to read aloud and you may like to ask questions that your child can answer about what they have read.
During or after reading the story, ask your child to find: the page with the word ‘____’ on it; the page with the most capital letters; a question mark or the most interesting spelling of a word. In this way, you are reinforcing what your child already knows about the way books work in a meaningful, but relaxing situation.

Reading is part of homework and we encourage all our children to engage in reading whether they are reading or being read too. You are never to young and you are never too old to enjoy a good book.Research shows that children, who are read too often, are better readers. Mem Fox, author of Possum Magic, says that children should have been read at least 3000 books before they begin formal schooling. That sounds like a lot of reading, but is actually about two a day. If you can’t manage two, try to share at least one book with your child every day!
May God bless you
Paula MacKenzie

Founder’s Day/Mary MacKillop Feast Day (8 August)
Next week, Thursday, 8 August, we will celebrate the Feast of St Mary of the Cross and her contribution to Australia and in particular, our school through the work of the Sisters of St Joseph. Her charisma is embedded into St Brigid’s history through the Sisters of St Joseph, thus we celebrate our Founder’s Day on this day with our traditional Mary MacKillop Mass and Mission Fete. The children have also made banners depicting the contribution that the Religious Orders of Mercy, Joseph and Francis have provided for our school over the past 117 years. Classes are also preparing for their respective stalls for our Annual Mission Fete and I sincerely thank in advance, all parents who assist by way of contribution to this. Mass will begin at 9.00am in the MacKillop Hall and everyone in our School Community is warmly invited to attend.
The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment 2019
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) from the week commencing Monday 5 August. The assessment will be accessible to students only online.
Students enrolled in Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 who are following a regular classroom program are expected to participate. Students with disability are also entitled to participate in the assessment. Exemptions may apply.
The Nature and Role of the BRLA
The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests developed and marked by the Office of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. Formal school and student reports are produced by the Office and will become available to schools in Term Four.
The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of student performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, and short and extended response items. Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school based assessment programs in RE.
Please contact your child’s teacher or myself if you have any enquiries regarding the administration of The Bishops' Religious Literacy Assessment.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum
I would like to remind all parents that at St Brigid’s we teach The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum in all year levels. The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS: CPC) is a respectful relationships and child safety curriculum that teaches all children and young people they have the right to be safe and they can help themselves to be safe by talking to people they trust.
The KS: CPC is delivered by teachers to children and young people each year from age 3 to Year 12. Teachers who deliver the curriculum complete training in its use. The KS: CPC fits primarily within the Health and Physical Education learning area of the WA Curriculum but can be taught across multiple learning areas.
The KS: CPS is an evidence based, best practice curriculum, developed collaboratively with child protection specialists, teachers, educational leaders and other professionals. It covers a range of topics including new additional material on current issues such as bullying and cyber safety.
Themes
The curriculum is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities.
Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe
Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.Focus Areas
The two themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the learners.- The right to be safe
- Relationships
- Recognising and reporting abuse
- Protective strategies.
More information regarding the KS: CPC will be provided in future newsletters.

GREAT SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Sebastian and Jackson have worked extremely hard and proven themselves to be selected to represent Tennis W.A in the the 2019 Inaugural National Indigenous Tennis Carnival (NITC) held by Tennis Australia in Darwin. The carnival will take place from 29th of August- 1st of September.
The NITC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, bringing together hundreds of individuals and groups to celebrate youth, music, art, food and health through the delivery of tennis, cultural activities and workshops. More than 180 participants from every state and territory will take part in the NITC across four days to compete for the championships.
Sebastian and Jackson attend Midland tennis club and are Coached by Cameron Fenner.
The boys attended a 4 week tryout, along with their family members Seth and Matthew. After 4 weeks of proving themselves and competing against a large number of children in all age groups, these two were picked to join a team of 6-12 players.
