Week 6 Term 3, 30 August 2019
ABSENTEE LINE 9250 2210
PRINCIPAL - PAULA MACKENZIE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Fatherhood calls for many challenges and hardships, which every dad bears with pride and happiness. Your dad has been your first friend who has always been with you, no matter what. He is the one person who has bestowed you with unconditional love and care, without asking for anything in return. When it comes to the relationship you share with your father, there are absolutely no strings attached. He may not show it, but he is always there for you, with his unwavering support and assistance. How often do you take time out to whisper a silent prayer to God for the health and happiness of this special person in your life? This Father’s Day, take it as an opportunity to seek blessings for your father, with a special prayer of gratitude. Remember to tell your dad how much you love him and what he means to you.
Confirmation Meeting
Our Confirmation candidates, parents and sponsors were present for their Sacramental meeting on Tuesday evening. It is always a joy to meet with our parents and students to help our families with their faith journey. We thank everyone who was able to attend. Special thanks to Our Parish for organising our guest speaker for the evening to speak with our parents and to help them gain a greater understanding of Confirmation. Thank you also to Father Liam, Mr Luke Shaw and Miss Althea Footman for running the evening for our students and helping them prepare for this very special Sacrament.
Netball
Our Netball season has been very well attended and a big thank you to our wonderful parents for coordinating this very worthwhile sport for our students. As the season comes to an end I know our children have enjoyed being part of the team and have tried their very best every week. We are so grateful for our wonderful parents for training our students and providing care and support throughout the season. Well done and congratulations to all our children and their amazing parents.
Performing Arts
This year we have once again been part of the Performing Arts Festival. This wonderful festival allows our children to shine in the Arts. St Brigid’s has a long tradition of being part of the festival every year. We see so many of our beautiful students performing in many areas of the Arts Festival which is wonderful to see. This week we saw our choir participating in the choral section and I must say they were just amazing. They sang two songs and they sang them so well. Mrs Alison Yeo our choir mistress is one in a million she chose such sensational songs and helped our children to become outstanding singers. Their range, tone and pitch were amazing, I was delighted to be present and hear their angelic voices sing out through the auditorium.
Father’s Day Stall
We have been blessed to have our awesome P & F once again bring the Father’s Day stall to our school. They have such a wonderful range of goods on offer to suit every budget. For the weeks leading up to the day they are there to help your children buy that special gift for their Dads. We are so greatful to have such a great group of motivated women who are prepared to come every morning and afternoon as well as during the day so that children can find that special gift.
Not only have they organised the gifts and even wrapped them but they also hold a Father’s Day raffle. I must say the prizes look sensational. Today at assembly the raffle will be drawn so we wish all our fathers good luck for this outstanding raffle.
Fathers’ Day Breakfast
Thank you to all our Dad’s, Grandfathers, Uncles and Caregivers who were able to make our Father’s Day breakfast on Thursday morning. I know our children were so delighted to have you join us and to have breakfast with them. I know that it is always a busy time in the morning but we were delighted to host the breakfast and thank you all for all you do for the children in our care. A big thank you to our amazing staff for helping to prepare the breakfast and hosting the breakfast.
Learning Journey
Just a reminder in Week Ten we will be holding our Learning Journey for our school. The classrooms will be opened from 3.30pm to 6.00pm for parents and caregivers to come and see the amazing work your children have produced. We encourage all parents and caregivers to come and walk through your child’s class with them so that they can show you their work.
Triple P Seminar – Power of Positive Parenting
Triple P is the parenting program that helps make raising kids easier. It gives you tips and ideas to help raise happy and confident kids, see more of the behaviours you like and less of the ones you don’t; and have better relationships with your family.
We are delighted that as a school we are able to provide a seminar for our parents that is all about finding out why our kids do what they do and what we can do about it. The session will run on Friday 13th September from 11.30am until 1.30pm. There will be a crèche facilities available from the kindy B room. The session will be run from the three year old room. There is no charge for this discussion and we are hoping to hold more sessions this year. We would like to gauge a response from our parents on what they would like to know about and the issues that they face everyone is welcome.
Values
Our values are what we believe to be important, right, fair and just. During our lives we will be influenced by many people and situations. As we watch, talk and listen to our family and friends, teachers, coaches and the media, we begin to develop our own thoughts and opinions about the world around us. We also begin to make judgements about others and the events that occur around us. It is important for us to have a personal set of values to help us cope with situations and make sound decisions about how to act, feel, live and treat ourselves and others.
Children begin to develop their own set of values by observing the actions and responses of others, beginning with their first teachers; you! Their values will change as they mature, but the family values that you instill in them will probably stay with them for life. To help your child develop their own values it is important that they are given opportunities to talk about their experiences and reactions to personal, local and world events; to talk about what upsets them and why. Have a family discussion about some of these issues and your own and others’ values will become more obvious: animal rights, nuclear energy, euthanasia, world poverty, extreme wealth, drugs or crime.
Our children need to have strong opinions about their world; they will be running it when we are sitting in the nursing home or fishing by the river in our retirement!
God Bless and May all our Dads have a wonderful and happy Father’s day
May God bless you

CODE OF CONDUCT
At St Brigid’s Primary School, we believe that each child is a precious gift from God created as an individual with his or her own unique gifts, talents and abilities. Our aim is to cherish each child and create an environment which enables all children to experience the joy and wonder of our world.
We acknowledge parents as the first educators of their child. We share a strong partnership with each family and encourage parents to become involved in the school. Our home/school relationships are based upon on- going communication, openness and trust. Parents are supported in understanding their role alongside the school and together we support the child to achieve their true potential.
The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to describe minimum standards of conduct in all behaviour and decision making to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
The Code applies to staff, students, volunteers, parents and guardians as applicable. The term ‘parents’ includes guardians.
The Code of Conduct includes the following Conduct Statements –
- You act safely and competently.
- You give priority to students’ safety and well-being in all your behaviour and decision making.
- You act in accordance with the values of the Gospel as defined in the Code of Ethical Conduct.

- You give impartial, honest and accurate information about the education, safety and well-being of students.
- You support all members of the school community in making informed decisions about students.
- You promote and preserve the trust and privilege inherent in your relationship with all members of the school community.
- You maintain and build on the community’s trust and confidence in Catholic schools and the Church.

SCHOOL NEWS
Multisports Notice
Multisports, on Monday afternoon’s, will now commence at 4:30pm from this coming Monday (2nd September). This is due to the program being offered to a number of different schools in the area, and the program is an opportunity to offer a sporting program to all of the younger members of the surrounding community. This time slot also allows for parents to pick their students up from school, give them an opportunity to get changed and have something to eat, then have them ready to participate at 4:30pm, back at school. The school will not be providing supervision after 3:30pm, and any students who are left unattended after this time before the program will be asked to wait at ‘Helping Hands after School Care”, for a fee, until the program commences at 4:30pm. I apologise for the change in times, however, the school is trying to assist the coordinators of the program as best we can.
St Brigid’s Junior Netball
On Saturday, Mrs Gooch and I had the joy of watching all of our St Brigid’s netballers play their weekend fixtures at Swan Park Netball Courts. The standard, enthusiasm and team work our players displayed was inspiring and I enjoyed every game I had the chance to spectate. Our netball mums and dads have done an amazing job of organising different aspects of the club this year and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on all of the hard work which they have put into what has been a successful season. It was also a great sight to see a number of former St Brigid's students coaching the various teams and passing on their knowledge to the next crop of talented players.
I strongly encourage all of our students who would like to give netball a go to approach myself so we can continue to build on what has been a fulfilling netball season. The netball club caters for all levels of experience and it would be great to see a few more teams entered into the different competitions next season. Congratulations to all of our netball players for their hard work and commitment to their different teams. Seeing all of the work come together on court last Saturday, and the smiles on all of our player’s faces, is exactly what all members of our school community want to see! Keep up the amazing work everyone!
Catholic Performing Arts Festival 2019
During this term, our school has participated in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival in various events. On Wednesday our choir travelled to the Vasto Club, to represent our school in the choral section of the Performing Arts Festival. Our students were excited and nervous for the performance, with many of the students attending for the first time. The choir performed very well and represented our school with pride. I would like to thank our accompanist, Bernadette Bombardieri who attended many rehearsals and our performance with us and the choir members parents for the way the students were well dressed.
Two of our students performed Piano Solos in this Festival. Grace Xu (5A) and Natasha Lovelock (6B). Both students performed at Zenith Music in Claremont during the term and performed very well with a great report. Both students attend piano lessons outside of school hours and participate in piano exams (AMEB). I want to congratulate Grace and Natasha for their efforts and dedication.
At the beginning of the term, three students performed in the Bible Reading section for this festival at Catholic Education Office, Leederville. Congratulations to Xeline Dequina, Thomas Lupica and Mikylla Bravo for their confident reading at this event.
As part of the Catholic Performing Arts Festival is the Angelico Art Festival. The Angelico Festival focuses on visual artwork for Primary and High school students. I would like to congratulate 5 students who’s artwork was selected by the teachers and leadership to be entered into this festival; Hamish McLennan (6A), Grace Xu (5A), Ruby Kingma (4A), Josie Wales (1B), Ayak (Tabitha) Kuol (PPA) and a group art piece by 6B.
I hope that our students had a wonderful day at these events and that they are proud of the way they performed. Congratulations to the choir, Angelico Art entries students, Grace and Natasha and our Bible Reader.

What is asthma?
Asthma is a long-term lung condition. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers, causing a ‘flare-up’. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airway squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow and there is more mucus. These things make it harder to breathe.
One in nine people in Australia has asthma. It affects people of all ages. Some people get asthma when they are young; others when they are older.
Asthma cannot be cured, but for most people it can be well controlled by following a daily management plan.
What are the symptoms of asthma?
A person’s asthma symptoms can vary over time - sometimes they will have no symptoms, especially when their asthma is well-controlled. Symptoms often vary from person to person, but they are most commonly:

- breathlessness
- wheezing
- tight feeling in the chest
- continuing cough
Symptoms often occur at night, early in the morning or during/just after activity. They are caused by the narrowing of the airways.
If your asthma is well controlled, you should only have occasional asthma symptoms.
If you have symptoms regularly, you should see your doctor, and visit the Controlling Asthma section.
If you’re not sure if you have asthma you should see your doctor. There is more information on diagnosis in Could it be asthma?
Causes
The causes of asthma are not fully understood, although people with asthma often have a family history of asthma, eczema and hayfever.
Research has shown that exposure to tobacco smoke (especially as a baby or young child), obesity and some workplace chemicals can increase the risk of developing asthma.
Researchers continue to try to find out more about what causes asthma and how we might prevent it.
