Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Just as bodies and minds grow, we know that our souls also need to grow in the life of grace. The Sacrament of Confirmation builds on the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist completing the process of initiation into our Catholic community. Sacraments are gifts that are part of who we are and who we will become. In Baptism a Christian becomes a child of God. Through the Eucharist, a Christian partakes in the life of Christ. In Confirmation, the graces of Baptism are brought to completion and we are empowered with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
On Sunday we were blessed to be present as our children made the Sacrament of Confirmation in our Parish. It was a very memorable occasion and we were surrounded by our families and friends. Father Benny and Father Liam ensured that the Sacrament was a very special event in the lives of our Parish. The children looked amazing and it was wonderful to see so many extended families present. Congratulations to all our candidates and may they be filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit throughout their lives.

John Burland Incursion
We were delighted to have John Burland visit our school on a musical incursion for our students. John is an internationally acclaimed Catholic musician and composer of Religious music for children, youth and adults. He brought to life his songs and our children were enthusiastic to join in and sing many of the songs they know that belong to John. They even learnt some of his new songs very quickly. There was movement and singing and lots of laughter. It was a wonderful incursion and enjoyed by all.

Junior Sports Carnival
What an awesome junior carnival we had on Thursday. The sun was shining and our parents came out to watch our sensational children give it their all. We saw our Kindergarten to Year Two students work through their rotations and participate in running races and baton relay races. The children were amazing on the day. A big thank you to Mr Harris for organising the day and for our outstanding staff for helping the children through each of the rotation. Our carnival had a new look to ensure that all our students were able to join in with every game and that parents would be able to get a little closer to watch the action. A big thankyou also to our amazing Year Six sports ministers who helped out on the day running the many different events, they helped to set up and pack away and did so many wonderful things on the day to help out our younger students.
P & F MEETING
On Tuesday we had our P & F meeting. As always, our P & F are an awesome group of women who constantly support our school and make such a difference in our school community. They are presently working towards helping to transform our library with some new items which will be seen next term. They are working beautifully with our awesome library staff to help make our library the place to be. Also we saw our dynamic women at the junior carnival providing a wonderful array of food and drinks. A big thank you to our P & F for all they do.
Our P & F will be running the School Disco this Friday night so please make sure your child/children have their tickets for this wonderful fun event.
Our P & F suggested that parents may find an internet/cyber safety talk valuable. So Mr Shaw has put together a survey to ask parents of their interest in this topic. We are happy to provide a great informative talk if parents are interested. Another great initiative by our P & F.
BOOK FAIR
Congratulations to our wonderful organisers that ran our Book Fair this year. The children had many wonderful books to choose from and there were lots of little extras to keep our children amused. A big thank you to Mrs Jocelyn Willis, Miss Althea Footman and Mrs Fiona Verrier for once again running a fantastic event for our school. I know the children were excited to choose their items and take them home.
INTERNET SAFETY
Encourage and support your children with their use of the internet. Teach them to make the right decisions and increase the levels of responsibility as children get older. You can access information about internet safety through the Federal Government’s Internet Safety Advisory Body – Netalert, via their comprehensive website at www.netalert.net.au
If you feel that your children have more knowledge and confidence than you when using the internet, you may be right. There are some simple ways of addressing this.
What you can do as a parent:
- Talk to your family about the importance of staying in safe sites online.
- Ensure that you have safety software installed on your computer; your internet service provider will be able to help you with this.
- Set up house rules for the use of the internet and, where possible, have the computer in view so that you can monitor its use.
- Check out safe sites for your children and bookmark them.
- Use filters to limit accidental access to unsuitable material.
- Limit email correspondence to a list of family and friends.
- Emphasize and discuss safe online behaviour.
- Investigate any chat rooms or online clubs that your child may want to use to ensure that they are legitimate.
- Use family-friendly search engines designed for children.
The internet can be a great tool for research and fact-finding if used correctly. The best approach is to sit with your child and help them through the wealth of information which is available at their fingertips.
SALARY SACRIFICE
I would just like to inform the school community that in 2020 I will be taking leave from school as part of a Salary Sacrifice scheme that I began five years ago. I was expected to take 2019 as my year away but as I had only been at the school for a year I asked to have this time extended. I was granted the one year extension but now I need to take my leave next year. Presently my position is being advertised by the Catholic Education Office and before the end of the term we should know who will be leading our school in 2020. I will look forward to returning in 2021 to once again lead our school.God Bless

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
We celebrated a beautiful Confirmation Mass on Sunday and I congratulate our Confirmation Candidates. Thank you to Fr Benny and Fr Liam for leading the Mass and to all involved in preparing our students for this occasion. Photos from the Confirmation can be viewed and ordered online at www.midlandphotos.com.au (password: confirmation2019)
SWIMMING LESSONS (PRE-PRIMARY - YEAR TWO)
I remind all Pre-Primary-Year Two parents that swimming lessons will be taking place over the next two weeks of this term. During swimming lesson weeks, students are to wear their sport uniform to school with their bathers underneath. Students are required to bring their thongs to wear to and from the pool – students will not be allowed to wear their thongs for the entire day. Swimming lesson times are as follows: Year 2 9:00-9:40am, Year 1 9:50-10:30am, Pre-Primary 10:40-11:20am.
LEARNING JOURNEY – SAVE THE DATE!
Our annual Learning Journey will be taking place on Wednesday 25 September beginning at 3:30pm and concluding at 6:00pm. This is an opportunity to celebrate the learning that has taken place in your child’s classroom over the course of the term. I encourage all parents and caregivers to attend this important event. Please note that our Learning Journey is an opportunity for you and your child to engage in conversations about their presented work samples. This event is not an appropriate time for conversations with your child’s teacher about your child’s academic progress. If you require a conversation of this nature, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher for a different time.
CODE OF CONDUCT
This week our Code of Conduct focus is on Conduct Statement Two: You give priority to students’ safety and wellbeing in all your behaviour and decision making.
The following examples are some ways parents can adhere to Conduct Statement Two:
- Respectfully communicate with members of the school community, including staff and other parents.
- Attend parent information evenings and parent/teacher meetings when scheduled.
- Read the school newsletter in order to be aware of what is happening in the school community.
- Welcome and learn from information relevant to the safety and wellbeing of your child.
- Keep the school updated with current information about your child. This includes relevant family information, including phone numbers, house address and email addresses.
- Be rational and realistic

SCHOOL NEWS
2019 Junior Faction Sports Carnival
Yesterday, our amazing students from Kindy through to Year 2, competed in the 2019 Junior Faction Sports Carnival. This year saw a different format to what has been used in the overall running of the carnival from previous years, in a bid to enhance participation and enjoyment for all of our students. The focus of the carnival was for all students to ‘do their best’ and to have fun competing against their friends from each of the different factions. The feedback which I received from our students was very positive. Each student who I had the chance to speak to during and after the carnival, was very excited to tell me their highlights from the morning and tell me what ribbons they had received for all their hard work. Well done students! Without your enthusiasm and participation, we cannot have such memorable events such as these.
I must also take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who prepared their children for the carnival, and were at the carnival cheering and encouraging all of our students. I understand that the format was different to previous years, however, your support is very much valued and I hope that your children came home and spoke about what their favourite parts of the carnival were.
Thank you also to all of the wonderful staff who assisted with the running of the team games, the organisation of students for their races, and the distribution of ribbons. Your assistance makes my job much more manageable and I hope you also enjoyed the carnival.
A final thank you must go to our awesome Year 6 students, who were on hand all morning and were critical to the setting up at the beginning, running of the team games throughout, and packing up at the conclusion of the carnival. It is a joy to see the maturity which you possess on these occasions and am I am very proud of your efforts.
I look forward to next week’s ‘Faction Field Events Carnival’ for Years 3 to 6. If any parents are available to assist next Thursday the 19th of September, could you please get in contact with administration or myself via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) as soon as possible. All help is welcomed and necessary to ensure we can provide a memorable experience for all of our students.
Many thanks,
Mr Samuel Harris
Physical Education SpecialistState Representation at St Brigid’s
On the 29th of August, two of our talented students, Sebastian Savarese (6B) and Jackson Phillips (4A), competed in 2019 National Indigenous Tennis Carnival. The carnival took place in Darwin, over four days, with both of our students representing their state and their families with great pride. The carnival is an opportunity for up and coming Indigenous tennis players to display their skills and to build experience in tournament play, with the potential to open up pathways to higher honours in the future.
From the discussions I have had with both boys, they had an amazing time, with a highlight being a meet and greet with 14 time grand slam champion, Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Another highlight was that the boys also won bronze medals for Western Australia in their age group! The school is very proud of the boys and I hope that this experience will see them become role models within our community and inspire the students of our school to work hard and do their best. Well done Sebastian and Jackson!

COMMUNITY NEWS
What is asthma?
Asthma is a long-term lung condition. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers, causing a ‘flare-up’. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airway squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow and there is more mucus. These things make it harder to breathe.
One in nine people in Australia has asthma. It affects people of all ages. Some people get asthma when they are young; others when they are older.
Asthma cannot be cured, but for most people it can be well controlled by following a daily management plan.
What are the symptoms of asthma?
A person’s asthma symptoms can vary over time - sometimes they will have no symptoms, especially when their asthma is well-controlled. Symptoms often vary from person to person, but they are most commonly:
- breathlessness
- wheezing
- tight feeling in the chest
- continuing cough
Symptoms often occur at night, early in the morning or during/just after activity. They are caused by the narrowing of the airways.
If your asthma is well controlled, you should only have occasional asthma symptoms.
If you have symptoms regularly, you should see your doctor, and visit the Controlling Asthma section.
If you’re not sure if you have asthma you should see your doctor. There is more information on diagnosis in Could it be asthma?
Causes
The causes of asthma are not fully understood, although people with asthma often have a family history of asthma, eczema and hayfever.
Research has shown that exposure to tobacco smoke (especially as a baby or young child), obesity and some workplace chemicals can increase the risk of developing asthma.
Researchers continue to try to find out more about what causes asthma and how we might prevent it.
