PRINCIPAL - PAULA MACKENZIE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Each year in our Parish we celebrate special feast days, on Sunday 26th May we celebrate Mary Help of Christians. Mary is our heavenly Mother she watches over us and protects us and intercedes on our behalf. Each year we invite our students and families to join us at the 9.30am Mass at St Brigid’s parish on Morrison Road. If the weather permits we will be part of the procession that walks around our Church and then processes into the Church. We invite two students to carry our banner and place it on the altar. We will also be inviting a number of our students to read the prayers of the faithful during Mass. Please come and join us if you are available.
NAPLAN
This week our Year Three and Year Five students having been sitting the NAPLAN online. They have been working very well and we are proud of their efforts. NAPLAN will finish next week.
BREAKFAST CLUB
Breakfast club runs every morning from 8.10am – 8.30am for the past six years this service has been provided by staff who volunteer their time. Each morning we have three staff members who work as a team to provide breakfast for the children in our school. The staff are very happy to volunteer their time but it does take from their time to prepare for the school day. At this time I am interested to see if there are any parents who would like to volunteer to help run breakfast club. It would mean coming into school by 7.45am and preparing the breakfast menu and then serving the children then the final clean up that finishes at 8.30am. This time commitment would be the same each day.
Ideally we would see 15 awesome parents give their time and choose a day of the week. To run this program efficiently we would like to see the same three parents on a given day for the whole term. I appreciate this is large ask but it would really be appreciated by us all.
There is no need to purchase anything for breakfast club just your time is required.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
Next week on Thursday and Friday 23rd & 24th May we are having our school photos. We ask that all children be in their full winter uniform for the photos not sports uniform. Thursday is the main day for photos but there is a catch up day on Friday.
Family photos will run on Thursday morning in the hall from 8.00am until 9.00am
KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE ONLINE
Using the internet, mobile phones and games consoles are now an every-day part of young people's lives. However, there are risks for children and parents need to know how to protect their children effectively.
Increasingly there are more opportunities for children to get online – at home, at school and through their mobile phones and games consoles.
The internet can be of great benefit to your child. It can help them with their homework and it can help them to make new friends.
The internet can also pose risks to your child. It is important to be aware of the dangers and to know how to keep your child safe online. It is important to understand the internet.
You may feel your child knows more about the internet than you do and find the idea of using it yourself a bit daunting. To keep your child safe it's important that you have an understanding of the internet, how your child uses it and the terminology used online.
Your child may be able to show you what they do and how it works or your local library, college or community centre may run classes on computers and the internet.
There are risks for children accessing the internet and using mobile phones it can put children at risk of:
- seeing disturbing information or images
- being the victim of online bullying (also known as cyberbullying)
- being contacted and manipulated by an adult for sexual purposes (also known as grooming)
- sharing personal and identifying information with strangers
- sending or receiving sexually explicit films, images or messages of themselves or others (this is known as sexting when sent by mobile phone).
Keeping your child safe is paramount therefore there are a few guidelines to help you keep your child safe online:
You need to talk to your child about the dangers posed by the internet
- tell them what they should do if they become worried or concerned
- explain that anything shared online or by mobile phone could end up being seen by anyone
- understand what your child does online and know which websites they visit
- put the computer where the whole family can see it, not out of sight in a bedroom
- By making sure children do not go to bed with their phones or other devices which can link to the internet as they could be online when they should be sleeping.
- use filtering software to block inappropriate sites
- encourage your child to use websites such as where they can find advice and guidance on safe (but fun) use of the internet.
God Bless

READING AT HOME
Over the next few weeks, I will be including some tips that may support you with home reading. Nightly reading forms an important part of homework here at St Brigid’s and research strongly supports fostering a love of reading at home. It is important that children are listened to when reading and also read to by an adult or more capable reader.
Talk to your child
Ask your child to talk about his day at school. Encourage him/her to explain something they did, or a game he played during recess.
Say silly tongue twisters
Sing songs, read rhyming books, and say silly tongue twisters. These help kids become sensitive to the sounds in words.
Read it and experience it
Connect what your child reads with what happens in life. If reading a book about animals, relate it to your last trip to the zoo.
Use your child's name
Point out the link between letters and sounds. Say, "John, the word jump begins with the same sound as your name. John, jump. And they both begin with the same letter, J."
Play with puppets
Play language games with puppets. Have the puppet say, "My name is Mark. I like words that rhyme with my name. Does park rhyme with Mark? Does ball rhyme with Mark?"
Trace and say letters
Have your child use a finger to trace a letter while saying the letter's sound. Do this on paper, in sand, or on a plate of sugar.
Write it down
Have paper and pencils available for your child to use for writing. Working together, write a sentence or two about something special. Encourage her to use the letters and sounds she's learning about in school.
Play sound games
Practice blending sounds into words. Ask "Can you guess what this word is? m - o - p." Hold each sound longer than normal.
Read it again and again
Go ahead and read your child's favorite book for the 100th time! As you read, pause and ask your child about what is going on in the book.
Talk about letters and sounds
Help your child learn the names of the letters and the sounds the letters make. Turn it into a game! "I'm thinking of a letter and it makes the sound mmmmmm."
