Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What a wonderful Founders Day we experienced this week.
We began by celebrating Mass as a community. Congratulations to Year Five for leading us in our Mass also to Father Benny and Deacon Liam really helped us to understand our great traditions and the special people that helped build our school to the amazing community it is now. It was the perfect way to begin our celebration and it was wonderful to see so many parents and extended families celebrate with us.
After Mass we had the setting up of the mission market, this is always such a delight to be part of. Thank you to our wonderful staff for organising stalls with their classes and the sensational parents who came and helped set up the white elephant stall for Pre Primary.
Our P & F dazzled us with their amazing sausage sizzle they really did cook up a storm on the day with great help from Mrs Kylie Dickenson and Mr Peter Constable. It really was a team effort.
It was a very busy time but looking at the faces of our students made it all worthwhile. A huge thank you to everyone for making this day so special.
Literacy Research
We can safely predict that those individuals who can read and write (and numerically calculate) are most likely to be long-lived, healthy individuals who will enjoy a satisfying life on this planet and contribute positively to society; so making sure that everyone has the best possible chance to learn to read well has to be a major goal for all school communities.
Parent and family involvement and contribution to the development of oral language and associated literacy learning is vitally important, as reflected in an extensive range of research around the world. One study concluded that “… the likelihood of a child succeeding in first grade depends, most of all, on how much she or he has already learned about reading before getting there.”
Parents of young children who encourage and support the development of their child’s literacy skills from the earliest years, give them greater chances to become students who achieve their potential and go on to lead effective, satisfying and productive lives in our communities.
Similarly, studies show that parents, who present the experience of reading as a mutually enjoyable experience with an emphasis on reading as a source of pleasure and personal fulfilment, will be more effective than an emphasis on the skills acquisition and academic aspects of reading development.
A UK study demonstrated the positive benefits in the development of literacy skills in families where parents agreed to read with their children and encourage their children to read aloud to them. The results showed that children who read with and to their parents made significantly greater progress in reading than those who did not engage in this kind of literacy sharing. In fact, the gains achieved through parents working with their children, were shown to be significantly greater than could have been achieved through small-group instruction conducted by an external professional coach.
Parents introduce their children to the pleasure and satisfaction of reading together and reading aloud. Elder siblings and grandparents can also productively share that role of reading mentor and guide. The ideal of parents having quiet, dedicated time with their children sharing a book has positive learning, personal, cognitive, connective and social development benefits. This later develops into a productive partnership between parents and schools working together to build a community that loves books and values literacy.
May God bless you

Founder’s Day & Mission Fete
Congratulations to all children and their respective families for your excellent support. The Mary MacKillop, Mercy, Joseph & Francis Murals, set a wonderful backdrop to our Feast Day Mass and the Year Five Readers are to be acknowledged for their excellent contribution. The Mission Fete was a fantastic success too, raising over $3,400.00! We are very appreciative to all who contributed to the stalls and for providing your children with such generous ‘donations’, thank you! A special thank you to the P&F for organizing and running the sausage sizzle and all other parents who assisted. Your contribution was very much appreciated!
Bishop’s Religious Literacy Assessment
The Year 3 & Year 5 classes completed this on line assessment this week. Results will be received and passed onto parents later in the year.

We will be having a Whole School Mass this coming Thursday 15th August, to celebrate this very important Feast Day. Mass will be hosted by the Year Four Classes and held at St Brigid’s Church beginning at 9.30am. All parents and friends are warmly invited to join us.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum
Last week I reminded parents and caregivers about the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum that is implemented here at St Brigid’s. The following information, categorised under each of the KS:CPC focus areas, provides parents with some strategies to support their child at home. This information is taken from the KS:CPC website and is written for children in Pre-Primary-Year Two. We are in the process of organising a parent evening to unpack the KS: CPC – watch this space!
Focus Area 1: Right to be safe
Support your child to:
- understand different feelings and emotions, eg happy, sad, scared, angry, surprised
- show a variety of feelings and know that we all need to express our feelings and emotions
- understand what being safe means and what makes a place safe. Reinforce in a range of environments, eg at home, at school, at the park, at the shops
- know what a warning sign might look and feel like, eg seeing someone suddenly get angry, butterflies in tummy, heart beating fast, shivering, can’t move
- understand what they can do if they experience warning signs, eg tell a trusted adult
- recognise safe and unsafe situations and risk-taking, eg using scissors, crossing the road, going on the monkey bar for the first time, talking to unknown people
- understand what an emergency looks like and sounds like and know what they can do if one occurs, eg tell a trusted adult, dial 000.
Focus Area 2: Relationships
Support your child to:
- understand that we all have rights, eg the right to be safe, the right to be cared for, the right to be listened to
- know the difference between things they may want such as chocolate or toys, and things they need such as food, a bed and a safe place to live
- understand relationships with their family, friends and others, and safe ways to interact (if consensual and trusted), eg hug, kiss, shake hands, wave
- recognise what bullying behaviour looks like and what to do if they or someone else is being bullied, eg tell the person to stop, walk away, talk to a trusted adult
- understand that personal power can be used positively and negatively, eg letting another child join in the game, not taking turns on the slide
- know what to do if someone tells them to do something that feels unsafe
- identify trusted people at home, in the family, at school and in the community. Include a support service such as Kids Helpline
- practise talking to the people on their trusted network and know how to get help if they need it.
- Useful resources: http://tiny.cc/UNCRC-Simplified| http://tiny.cc/BullyStoppers-Parents |https://kidshelpline.com.au
Focus Area 3: Recognising and reporting abuse
Support your child to:
- know and use the correct names for sexual body parts (see http://tiny.cc/CallBodyPartsWhatTheyAre for information)
- understand that their whole body is private (including sexual body parts and the mouth) and no one has the right to touch them without their permission
- know the difference between safe and unsafe touching, eg safe – if two friends agree to hold hands or hug; unsafe – touching sexual body parts unless receiving medical treatment by a trusted adult, doctor or nurse
- understand that some touch may be uncomfortable but necessary, eg when going to the doctor or dentist
- practise saying ‘No’ and ‘Stop it’ if they feel unsafe or are being touched in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable
- know how to recognise abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect), eg being hurt, seeing others being abused, being touched inappropriately, no food or clean clothes
- understand who they can seek help from in the community if they are lost or unsafe, eg police officer, shopkeeper, bus driver
- know how to use the internet safely and respectfully (under supervision)
- know the difference between safe and unsafe secrets, tricks and threats, eg safe – surprise birthday present; unsafe – sexual touching, being threatened with punishment or tricked with gifts. If unsure, talk to a trusted adult.
- Useful resources: https://esafety.gov.au/iparent| https://www.1800respect.org.au
Focus Area 4: Protective Strategies
Support your child to:
- practise telling a trusted adult a problem
- practise saying their name, address and telephone number
- regularly review their trusted networks to ensure they include people that they know will listen to them and help them
- practise solving problems in a range of environments, eg use puppet play or role modelling situations and resolutions
- practise assertive language such as ‘No’ or ‘Stop, I don’t like it when you…’
- be persistent, especially when seeking help (to keep asking for help until a trusted adult helps them)
- Useful resource: http://tiny.cc/BHC-Assertiveness
More information regarding the KS: CPC will be provided in future newsletters.

SCHOOL NEWS
CPSSA Interschool Cross Country 2019
Last week, our Interschool Cross Country Team travelled to Alderbury Reserve in Floreat to compete in the 2019 CPSSA Interschool Cross Country Carnival. Our team were excited and were looking forward to the challenge of competing against 15 other schools that make up our sporting school association. The goal for the day was for students to simply ‘do their best’ and to enjoy the challenge and the atmosphere of an interschool event.
The team did exactly what we set out to do, and I am extremely proud of each student’s individual effort, as well as the team spirit which we displayed from the moment we gathered before school, during the carnival day itself and through to the final briefing at the end of the day back at school. To go with the achievement of the goal we had set at the beginning of the day, we also were able to celebrate some fine individual performances, with a number of top 15 finishes in the 48 competitor races and an amazing effort by Brodie Ward (4B), who managed 2nd place in his event.
I would like to thank all of our awesome students for their behaviour, effort and sportsmanship throughout the carnival, with a special acknowledgment for those students who have put in countless laps of ‘Running Club’ each and every week. Thank you to Mrs Deans for her assistance throughout the day and ensuring that our students were well prepared for their events. Thank you also to Ms Mol and Mrs Kingma for volunteering their time and assisting with our schools allocated role for the day. The school and I really appreciate your support and for giving up your time.
I look forward to the upcoming athletics season and preparing our students for the different athletic disciplines, whilst continuing to promote the ethos of ‘doing your best’.

Dear Parents & Guardians,
St Brigid’s Primary School, Middle Swan, has been fortunate to have been given the opportunity to participate in one of the Edmund Rice Centre’s “Edmund Rice: Multisport Programs”. This program is an exciting opportunity for students from Year 1 upwards and aims to provide an opportunity for students to experience a number of different sports in a safe and encouraging environment. The program seeks to promote physical activity, participation, enjoyment, personal and professional development, and is a great way for students to ‘have-a-go’ at a new sport or continue to develop their skills in a sport that they are familiar with.
Where: St Brigid’s Primary School, Middle Swan (Meet at the hall)
When: Every Monday, starting Week 4 (12th of August), 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Participants: Year 1 upwards
Cost: FREE!
What to bring: Students who wear their physical education uniform on a Monday may wear their uniform during the program. Students who were their formal school uniform on this day may bring a change of clothes that they can change into after the conclusion of the school day.
Attached is a an information sheet which also has a consent form on the back which must be filled out in full and handed into the office, to a member of staff or to the coordinators of the program before commencing the program. This program is an ongoing program which will be available to students for this term and beyond.
This opportunity should be viewed as a privilege. As such, all students will be expected to display excellent behaviour before, during and after the program each week. In the event that a student chooses to display inappropriate behaviour, their parents will be contacted and the student will forfeit their place in the program.
If you require any further information, there will be a representative from the program attending assembly this week, or alternatively you may contact myself at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
As a school, we hope we can make the most of this valuable opportunity we have been presented and maximise the benefits that this program has to offer.
As mentioned above, please contact myself between Tuesday and Friday if you have any questions about the program.
Kind regards,
Mr Samuel Harris
