SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
We congratulate our Year Six students who will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday 8 September. This is an important step in their faith journey and I know that all students have been working hard covering their unit of work leading up to Confirmation to ensure that they are well prepared. This week all Year Six students took part in a Confirmation Retreat, facilitated by Mr Karl Brown. I joined the Year Sixes for a portion of this day and it was pleasing to observe their positive interactions. Yesterday Fr Benny visited to provide all Confirmation candidates with the opportunity for Reconciliation, prior to their Confirmation. Fr Benny will be leading the mass on Sunday, with assistance from Fr Liam. I thank Miss Althea Footman for all of the work that she has done in the lead up to Confirmation. Miss Footman’s leadership and organisation has been commendable. I also thank Mrs Melissa Nibali and Mrs Gabrielle D’Agnone-Doyle for their assistance with Confirmation preparation, while they have been teaching in 6A this term. I invite all members of our community to join us at St Brigid’s Church on Sunday at 11am to support our Confirmation Candidates.
YEAR ONE LITURGY
Our Year One students led a liturgy on Tuesday and I thank the teachers, Mrs Jocelyn Willis and Miss Sarah Riddoch, for their planning of this important event. I also thank Fr Benny for leading this liturgy. Unfortunately we only had a few parents attend this liturgy. I encourage our parents and caregivers to attend class liturgies in the future as they provide a beautiful opportunity to nurture our faith development in the classroom setting.
OPTIMINDS
Our Opti-MINDS teams presented their long term challenge last weekend as well as their short term challenges. Under the guidance of Mrs Alison Yeo, our students have been busily preparing their long term challenges over the last few months. Participants receive the short term challenge on performance day and then need to work collaboratively to prepare and present a response. I congratulate our representatives and thank Mrs Yeo for leading this valuable initiative.
JUNIOR SPORTS CARNIVAL
Our Kindy-Year Two students look forward to participating in our junior sports carnival on Thursday 12th of September. Mr Sam Harris has sent home information regarding this event and we look forward to seeing many parents on the day cheering for our participants. Our Year Three-Six students will have their opportunity to shine the following week at the Faction Field Events on Thursday 19th September. More information will be circulated about this event soon.
Triple P Seminar – Power of Positive Parenting
Triple P is a parenting program that helps make raising kids easier. It gives parents tips and ideas to help raise happy and confident kids, see more of the behaviours you like and less of the ones you don’t, and have better relationships with your family.
As mentioned in The Link last week, we are delighted that as a school we are able to provide a seminar for our parents that is all about finding out why our kids do what they do and what we can do about it. The session will run on Friday 13th September from 11.30am until 1.30pm. There will be a crèche facilities available from the Kindy B room. The session will take place in the Pre-Kindy classroom. There is no charge for this discussion and we are hoping to hold more sessions this year. We would like to gauge a response from our parents on what they would like to know about and the issues that they face everyone is welcome. If you are planning to attend this session, please RSVP via this link: https://tinyurl.com/y3nkmzmp
SWIMMING LESSONS (PRE-PRIMARY - YEAR TWO)
I remind all Pre-Primary - Year Two parents that swimming lessons will be taking place over the last two weeks of this term. At this point, all swimming enrolment forms should have been returned to class teachers. If you have not yet returned this form, please do so by Monday 9 September. During swimming lesson weeks, students are to wear their sport uniform to school with their bathers underneath. Students are required to bring their thongs to wear to and from the pool – students will not be allowed to wear their thongs for the entire day.
LEARNING JOURNEY – SAVE THE DATE!
Our annual Learning Journey will be taking place on Wednesday 25th of September beginning at 3:30pm and concluding at 6:00pm. This is an opportunity to celebrate the learning that has taken place in your child’s classroom over the course of the term. I encourage all parents and caregivers to attend this important event. Please note that our Learning Journey is an opportunity for you and your child to engage in conversations about their presented work samples. This event is not an appropriate time for conversations with your child’s teacher about your child’s academic progress. If you require a conversation of this nature, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher for a different time.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Last week I wrote about the Code of Conduct and its implementation at St Brigid’s School. The Code of Conduct clearly states the behaviours and expectations required by all staff, students, parents and volunteers and anyone who spends significant time at St Brigid’s. The Code of Conduct can be found on our webstie at https://stbrigidsms.wa.edu.au/images/pdf/Code_of_Conduct.pdf Throughout the rest of the school year, I will briefly outline what eacsh Conduct Statement is and highligha few examples of what this might look like from a parent’s perspective.
Conduct Statement 1: You act safely and competently.
The following examples are ways parents can adhere to Conduct Statement 1:- Drop off and pick up your child in accordance with school guidelines. This includes proper procedures for late drop offs and early pickups and entry onto school grounds during the school day.
- Ensure your child is at school on time, dressed appropriately and has the necessary school supplies, including appropriate food.
- Information and photos of students is not to be taken and/or circulated without the express permission of the individual student’s parents. This includes discussion of students, families and staff on the internet and amongst community members.
- Be mindful and vigilant of your child/ren's internet activity.
- Seek advice and assistance from experts and/or the school principal/staff as necessary.

What is asthma?
Asthma is a long-term lung condition. People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers, causing a ‘flare-up’. In a flare-up, the muscles around the airway squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow and there is more mucus. These things make it harder to breathe.
One in nine people in Australia has asthma. It affects people of all ages. Some people get asthma when they are young; others when they are older.
Asthma cannot be cured, but for most people it can be well controlled by following a daily management plan.
What are the symptoms of asthma?
A person’s asthma symptoms can vary over time - sometimes they will have no symptoms, especially when their asthma is well-controlled. Symptoms often vary from person to person, but they are most commonly:
- breathlessness
- wheezing
- tight feeling in the chest
- continuing cough
Symptoms often occur at night, early in the morning or during/just after activity. They are caused by the narrowing of the airways.
If your asthma is well controlled, you should only have occasional asthma symptoms.
If you have symptoms regularly, you should see your doctor, and visit the Controlling Asthma section.
If you’re not sure if you have asthma you should see your doctor. There is more information on diagnosis in Could it be asthma?
Causes
The causes of asthma are not fully understood, although people with asthma often have a family history of asthma, eczema and hayfever.
Research has shown that exposure to tobacco smoke (especially as a baby or young child), obesity and some workplace chemicals can increase the risk of developing asthma.
Researchers continue to try to find out more about what causes asthma and how we might prevent it.
